Personality:

Malia Tate (née Hale) is a 17 year old girl, adoptive daughter of Henry and Evelyn Tate, an ordinary Californian couple with a daughter younger than Malia. In all appearances, she's just another high school girl who struggles through the tribulations of adolescence. She's quite pretty, but not overall girly. She tends more towards the tomboyish and rowdy side, usually dressing in worn shorts or jeans, loose shirts and boots. Her behavior is also rowdy, being very direct in the way she talks to people and lacking subtlety most of the time. And of course, if anyone makes her angry, she has no misgivings in retaliating with a punch in the face or any other physical assault. But essentially, she's a a good and rather naive girl.

However, there is not much ordinary about Malia. Unknown to her, her birth father is Peter Hale, a werewolf, and an unknown woman, likely a werecoyote, is her mother. Through them Malia inherited the power of a shape-shifter, able to acquire the characteristics of a coyote, such as fangs and claws. Unfortunately, as she was given up for adoption a few weeks after her birth, she got no training on how to use her powers, and more importantly control during the full moon. The lack of training, and even knowledge of what she truly was, ended in the tragic incident in which she killed her adoptive mother and sister when she was 9 years old.

Due to that incident, Malia somehow shifted completely into animal form, living as a coyote during 8 years, during which her father assumed her to be death. Having spent nearly half of her life as an animal impacted her behavior once she became human again. Even though she is able to talk, walk and eat properly by the time we see her interacting with the rest of the cast of the show, much of the way she acts is very instinctual and based on the rules of wildlife. Often, she lets the wild side of her show, such as casually mentioning her favorite meal is deer or that she could try catching her friends' scent when asked about their whereabouts. The fact that she makes this sort of remarks so naturally confuses people, who often don't know whether she's joking and how they should react to it. Her struggle was such that she even spent a time in a psychiatric hospital, trying to deal with life as a human.

"I sometimes ran from cougars trying to eat me."

Her wild conduct is not only shown through the things she says, it is also seen by the way she finds it difficult to form relationships with other people. Despite the fact that she spends most of her time with other supernatural teenagers (as a member of Scott's pack) who know what she really is, she has yet to form a lasting attachment to them. More than once she has mentioned than in a dangerous situation she would let her friends die if it meant her own survival. Stiles does claim she's progressing, and she slowly begins to care about others.

"If she was weak and injured, yeah. If hunting had been bad that season I would eat her. Then I'd leave."

Interestingly, this condition doesn't apply to Stiles Stilinski. Their relationship didn't start out very well, considering she didn't feel grateful that he and Scott had disrupted her "peaceful" life as a coyote and forced her to reintegrate into human society. In fact, upon their first meeting after she became a girl again, she punched him in the face to show her ungratefulness. However, since he didn't treat her like she was a monster or a freak, she slowly warmed up to him, and actually chose him as his mate.

Even in this, the way she acts is half animal, as she doesn't follow a real process of courtship and dating, she simply claimed Stiles as her own. Throughout different events of the series, Malia has shown that she truly cares about Stiles, to the point of saying she would never leave him behind, even though she does remark she would leave everyone else. She's quite dominating in the pairing, although she often listens to his advice, specially concerning school and random stuff about human life. It is also intriguing to note that somehow, part of her though process has become synced to his, as shown by the highlighter system she uses for studying, which is akin to the color code Stiles often uses when trying to connect clues in the current supernatural mystery he and his friends get involved in.

"Green is for the things I understand, yellow is for "I'm working on it", and red means "I have no clue". I'm mostly using red."

What that last quote indicates is that school hasn't been an easy adaptation for Malia. Though she went to school as a child and knows how to read, write, and probably basic math, she missed 8 years of education, and definitely isn't up to par to her peers. Stiles and Lydia do their best to help her catch up, and she's working hard on it. Unfortunately, she doesn't always have the patience to study, and of course she can't explain her teachers why she missed so many years of school. Slowly she's getting better and it, and eventually she could be able to pass the year and keep on the same class her friends.

As it was mentioned before, Malia is Peter Hale's long lost daughter, though at first neither of them knew about that. It's not yet clear what happened, but we know that Talia Hale, Peter's sister and Alpha, erased her from Peter's memory and baby Malia was adopted by the Tates. Who is her mother and what happened to her? It's a mystery yet to be solved. The only clue provided by Peter is that she is called "Desert Wolf". At her current canon point, she doesn't yet realize anything about this, and still believes Tate is her father. As for Peter, she knows about him what Scott and Stiles have told her, which is nothing good. She did meet him in person once, but as the boys, she doesn't trust him. However, she can tell Scott and Stiles are hiding something important from her, and she's determined to find out what, no matter they don't tell her for her own protection.

"He’s basically satan in a v-neck."

Not much is known about her present relationship with Mr. Tate. She was shown being happy when she went back home, after regaining her human form. Eventually, her father must have found something wrong with her, because she was sent to the mental care institution Eichen House. Malia does feel a terrible guilt for having killed her mother and sister, even though she couldn't help herself, the full moon had overpowered her and made her lose control. After Eichen House, it's unknown if she went back home, but even if she did, she must not have found it very home-like, as she sneaks into Stiles' room most nights and spends most of her time there. That is, whenever she's not on a mission with her friends.

What her life in Teleios will be like? She'll be very unsettled at losing her powers, since it was something that kept her in touch with her animal side. Without her claws and fangs, she'll feel defenseless, something that won't prove good for her temper. As for losing her more developed senses, she'll definitely feel the sensory input lacking, since she does rely mostly on her sense of smell to obtain information from her surroundings. Oh the other hand, Malia will be relieved to see some of her friends in Teleios, and they'll be the only people she'll trust at the beginning. Eventually, she might open up to other people, especially if she sees Stiles and the others believing in them. About Peter, well, she won't be comfortable to see him hang around her friends, especially her mate, and it will be hard for her to believe he is a different man. Also, what will happen when she finds out he's her father, well, that remains to be seen.

Powers/Abilities:

Heightened sense of hearing, smelling and seeing.

Fast healing from injuries.

Enhanced reflexes, agility and strength, she'd actually be a great athlete if she committed to it.

Ability to partially shift to coyote shape (grows fangs and claws). At some point she had shifted fully to animal form, but she can't seem to do it back and forth.

It is to important to point out that Malia isn't yet in full control of her powers, and is learning whatever Scott can teach her. However, she's not clueless, as she uses most of them by instinct, as she did when she was living as a coyote.

Also, like werewolves in Teen Wolf, she's susceptible to wolfsbane poisoning and she finds it hard to restrain her killing instincts during the full moon.

[Malia looked at the white apron thrust upon her by one of the Agents and sighed in exasperation.] Look, I don't know what you actually want me to do, but let me tell you, I don't know how to cook anything, at all. I just never had to learn, ok?

[Not like the Agents really care about that.] And I really don't want to wash dishes and kitchen stuff. I mean, why do I even have to do this? I don't want a job, any job. I never asked to be here, I don't know what you mean by this debt thing, but all I want is to go back home. And about the free food and stuff, which is not so free if we have to work for it, I don't need it, I can take care of myself!

[Except that she's bluffing about that last, since she lost her powers upon arriving here, and she'll be needing a roof and basic supplies the Agents can provide for those who do their jobs.]

What do you mean what am I good at? Hunting, of course. Or at least I used to be until someone decided to take away my powers. Like this, I don't even know. Hopefully I'm still strong enough to punch you! [And just like that, she aims a punch at their head.]

Prose Sample:
She stood in the middle of the room, looking like a cornered animal. Or maybe more exactly, as an animal outside of her natural environment. Turning her head from one side to the other, she looked around, trying to figure out where she was. She couldn't remember how she had gotten here, all she knew was that she had fallen asleep on Stiles' bed, as she had taken to doing...

Stiles! She tried to catch his scent, but her sense of smell was gone! Or not gone, but lessened. Human? She tried focusing her hearing, but that wasn't working either, all she could hear was a jumble of noises, and not very clearly. She tried transforming, at least unsheathing her claws, but nothing! She was defenseless, in an unknown place, and with no idea if Stiles and Scott and the others were here.

Cautiously, and ready to bolt at the first sign of danger, Malia made her way across the Temple. Whenever someone came close to her, she glared at them, though her eyes were no longer able to glow cold blue. Her glare was accompanied by a soft growl-like sound, or as much of a growl she could make as a human. She was not in the mood to try to discern other people's intentions. Right now, all she cared about was to find a way out of this place.
